E: Hello Tim, so first question who are you and what do you do?
T: I’m Tim Smith, I’m a freelance photographer. I do a whole load of different photographic work, but I’m particularly interested in doing photography with arts and culture organisations which has included Mind the Gap for a long time.
E: Since the dawn of time isn’t it?
T: Almost.
E: How did you get into being a photographer?
T: I trained to be a newspaper and magazine photographer, for many years I worked for a news agency in Bradford which included lots of work for review supplements for papers like The Guardian and The Observer. I used to do production photographs for those papers and that’s how I forged a relationship with Mind the Gap. I could burble on forever about my photographic influences but I won’t, as it will probably bore the people reading this!
E: What are you doing for Mediabox?
T: I’m producing still photos to illustrate various ideas and scenarios that Mind the Gap people have come up with – that’s it in a nutshell, I think!
E: You obviously enjoy it, but have you had any aargh moments?
T: What, taken my bat home? No, but that’s because I enjoy working with Mind the Gap and hopefully it’s a fruitful relationship on both sides. As a photographer they are a good company to work with, as they are people who can think visually. And also a group of people open to collaborative working… I’m not just there to press a button to order, I have some input in turning people’s ideas into visual messages.
E: One more question, tell us one interesting fact about you.
T: About me?
E: Yes.
T: I don’t know, hmm (long pause)… I’m thinking if there’s something to do with theatre (really long pause!)… before I moved to Bradford I’ve never lived anywhere longer than 3 years, I’ve been here 25 – which is half of my life. On good days I think it’s because Bradford is a great place to live and work, on bad days I think maybe I’m stuck in a rut.
E: You could always move into the big hole?
T: Maybe I will.

S: Before you ask, I wasn’t there and I don’t know who did it!
E: Very funny! Thanks Si, could you tell us who you are and what you do?
S: My name’s Si I run a recording studio and production company in Leeds. For this project I’ve been doing audio recording and sound design.
E: How did you get into your field?
S: From being 14 I played in bands and then when I finished school I was a semi-professional musician. I did lots of at home productions and recording with my brother. Then I decided to do a degree at Leeds College of Music. In my current role I record bands, sound design and basically anything to do with music.
E: What are you doing with Mediabox?
S: My job is to bring together the audio elements of the assets for Mind the Gap, then mixing it all together.
E: Have you had an aargh moment yet?
S: Not yet! On starting the project though, I did think that’s a lot of work for the time I’ll have at Mind the Gap. It’s never been at that point though, it’s just about getting it done.
E: Are you enjoying it?
S: Yes, it’s using lots of skill sets, I’m doing lots of things at the same time that normally I’d do separately. Working with actors and seeing their ideas coming together is very rewarding.
E: Last question, you can relax now! Tell us one interesting fact about you.
S: I played blues harmonica in a band for 12 years. Is that interesting?
E: I’m sure some of my readers will find that interesting.

E: Obviously I know you, but for those who don’t what do you do?
D: I’m Production Manager and Tech bloke for Mind the Gap. I try and make sure everyone has the right kit and it works so that they can do their beautiful theatre and media-ness!
E: How did you get into techyness?
D: I was interested in it from school, then when I went to 6th Form college I volunteered doing lighting at shows. At Uni I got in with the guys who did the tech for gigs and kind of drifted into it from there. Later, I spoke to someone from Bradford Theatres who said that there aren’t many people who train technicians. I trained to be a teacher and that for a while, then I worked for a long time at Bradford Theatres and worked my way up through there.
E: What are you doing for Mediabox?
D: I’m tech support really, making sure that the experts have the right equipment in the right place, sourcing locations and props, and supporting the experts to make sure they can deliver their expertise.
E: Is there anything that has made you want to throw a computer screen out of a window?
D: Not really, I thought it was going to be more difficult and it has gone more smoothly than I expected. There have been a couple of times when I’ve had to be in 4 places at once, and even a man of my talent can’t do that! But we’re infront of schedule and producing some really good stuff.
E: Are you enjoying it?
D: Yes, it’s good to see us working with media and seeing how very different it is from theatre. And it’s great to see everyone’s confidence with the equipment growing so much!
E: So Dave, last thing, tell us one interesting fact about you.
D: About Mediabox?
E: About anything.
D: My left hand has appeared on stage with Ken Dodd, how’s that?
E: That’s, erm… interesting.

I was making a film at the Interchange, it’s about a girl who gets her phone stolen – Joanne played the thug and I played the girl.
What i like to do at mind the gap
I can do a lot of different things at mind the gap, like using the camera and doing filming. I would like to be a film and television director to use directing skills. and to be in charge of actors and actresses. from Jonathan Lewis Acting Company member.
